Eyewear that just screamed sophistication, elegance, and style with oversized sunglasses in a cat-eye shape that everyone wanted to get their hands on. ![]() It wasn’t till the 60s, thanks to the iconic role played by Audrey Hepburn, that cat-eye sunglasses skyrocketed. It was during these years that the demand for prescription cat eye glasses increased exponentially. ![]() Through the 50s cat-eye glasses grew in popularity and were on the faces of celebrities and the average person. The corner of the glasses was characterized by gold embellishments. In the 1940s, cat-eye glasses were known as the Harlequin and had distinctive thick frames and rectangular lenses. Inspired by the notable masks worn in Venice, Schinasi created a new frame design that is extremely popular to this day. It was then that Altina Schinasi took it upon herself to vamp up eyewear with stylish and extravagant frames. The first pair of cat-eye frames date back to the 1930s. These numbers come in handy and can act as a reference for you to pick the frames that best fit you.Decades may have passed but cat-eye glasses will continue to persist. Sometimes there is a fourth number that refers to the lens height. The first number, 54, represents the lens width the second number, 16, refers to the bridge size, while the last number, 140, is the temple length. When buying new eyeglasses, it's always best to write down the frame size from your old pair of prescription glasses if they fit well on your face. The width is limited by the frame style so if you personally favor wider lenses, you will need to go for frames that wider lenses fit in. Temple length can fall between 120mm and 150mm with 135mm, 140mm, 145mm and 150mm being the most common. In other words, it's the "arm length" of the frame.
